Shortly after the death of his father-in-law, the multi-millionaire John D. Rockefeller (1839 – 1937), the Marquis de Cuevas ordered his portrait to Bernard Boutet de Monvel one evening in November 1937 that they dined at the Hotel Pierre At New York. He imposed every detail of a composition that the artist, though befriended the fantastic marquis since his marriage in 1921 with a childhood friend of the latter, never managed to decipher.
