The painter Maurice Boutet de Monvel, to whom the publisher Charles Delagrave proposed in 1881 to participate in his new children’s magazine entitled Saint-Nicolas, delivered for his famous “Jeudis” illustrations made revolutionary by the freshness of their execution inspired by Primitive, only by their biting spirit, and by the fact that they were the first to restore, instinctively, the magical, irrational and wonderful world of childhood.
